How To Take Care of Your Jewellery

Here are a few simple tips to help you keep your jewellery clean and cared for.

. Don’t sleep with your necklace on. You may catch your hand under the chain and break it. Take your necklace off at night, close the clasp and hang it up on a nail, pin, jewellery tree or anything that will allow your necklace to hang down. Keeping the clasp closed when not in use will prevent knots.

. Pearls need extra attention. Try not to get any harsh chemicals on them including perfume, soaps and shampoo. When you take them off, wipe with a soft cloth to rid them of the salts in perspiration and store in a soft pouch. Never store pearls in plastic.

. Sterling Silver will tarnish so clean occasionally with a special silver polishing cloth.

. Any threaded necklace, including beads, will stretch eventually so lie them flat when not wearing.

. The best way to clean gold, diamonds and other hard stones, is with soap and water. For a professional clean, the way they do it in jewellery shops, try a solution of a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid and a few drops of cloudy ammonia added to a cup of warm water. Soak overnight and rinse well in the morning. If a ring is very dirty, scrub gently with an old toothbrush after the soapy bath, and then rinse well.
Do not use this method on coral, pearls, amber, emeralds or any other soft and porous stone.
